Ipsos Poll Findings Show Over Three-Quarters Believe That Gov’t And Power Sport Organizations Should Work Together To Enhance Mutually Beneficial Goals

TORONTO, Sept. 21, 2015 /CNW/ – According to an Ipsos Public Affairs poll 73% of Canadians believe that recreational power sports perform well in contributing to quality of life and leisure. Just over half of Canadians expressed favourable opinions toward ATVing, snowmobiling, off-road motorcycling and 4×4 off-roading with the highest levels of support in Quebec.

These are the findings of an Ipsos poll of 2,006 Canadians conducted in August of this year (https://ipsos-na.com/news-polls/pressrelease.aspx?id=6994). The results were revealed by Ipsos Global CEO, Darrell Bricker at the kick-off to the first ever national power sports industry conference.

Bob Ramsay, President of the COHV was pleased to learn that “Almost one-third of Canadians are interested in participating or watching power sports and that one-quarter would want to join a power sports club.” Ramsay was also interested in poll results that concluded, “The greatest opportunity for expansion appears to be in 4X4, off-road motorcycling and side-by-side ROVs.”

“With so many Canadians expressing favourable impressions of power sports and a willingness to give them a try our industry has a promising future,” said Ed Klim, President of the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association. “It’s clear that manufacturers, retailers and rider organizations have a real opportunity to grow their customer base and membership levels.”

In his presentation, Bricker noted that forty percent of Canadians have participated in at least one power sport activity. Other notable takeaways from the survey results were:

• Over three-quarters support the use of sport vehicle registration fees to be used to enhance trails for power sports.
• Over three-quarters believe that Gov’t and power sport organizations should work together to enhance mutually beneficial goals.
• 40% are interested in participating in the future, including 12% who have never tried
• Greatest barriers to participating more: affordability and having friends to go with

ENTHUSIASM FOR RIDING STILL STRONG

EDMONTON, AB (January 28, 2016) – The Motorcycle & ATV Show – Edmonton presented by Dalton Timmis Insurance took place January 15th  -17th,, 2016.

Despite the current economic climate and cool temperatures over 30,000 Central Albertans made their way to the Expo Centre over the course of the three-day Show.  Enthusiasts checked out all the new two, three and four-wheel models from all the major manufacturers.

The annual SHE Rides Nite was held on Friday, January 15th.   When the qualifiers names were drawn and announced the excitement mounted, as there was a one in five chance of winning a brand new Kawasaki.  Nan from Edmonton chose the key that started the 2016 Ninja EX300 courtesy of Canadian Kawasaki Motors and Blackfoot Motosports.

The Motor Madness and Mayhem Show drew big crowds throughout the weekend and those that took in the show were treated to some amazing stunt riding, aerial action including Heath Frisby flipping a sled.

The Yamaha Riding Academy was extremely popular and the sessions filled up fast.  Dozens of kids took the opportunity to learn from the professionals in a positive, controlled, supervised environment.  The kids and parents were all smiles when they left the track after completing their riding session.

Eighteen qualifiers gathered late Sunday afternoon for their chance to win the grand prize, a 2016 Bonneville 800 Street Twin valued at $12,000, graciously provided by Triumph Motorcycles and Blackfoot Motosports.  Ryan from St. Albert ended up the lucky winner and is eager to take out his brand new bike this Spring.

CANADIANS SPENT $6.9 BILLION ON DIRECT ACTIVITIES
INVOLVING ATVs and ROVs IN 2015

Toronto –An independent economic impact study completed by Smith Gunther Associates Ltd., reported that in 2015, Canadians spent $6.9 billion on activities directly involving All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and Recreational Off- Highway Vehicles (ROVs) also known as side-by-sides.

“The purpose of the study was to comprehensively determine the economic impact of not only the purchase of ATVs and ROVs but also related economic activities for Canada and each of its provinces and territories,” stated Bob Ramsay, President of the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV). “The study encompassed ATV and ROV activities that included riding gear, clothing, insurance and travel related to ATV and ROV use. Together these purchases and activities constitute the direct and indirect expenditures involving ATV and ROV participation.” added Ramsay.

Excluding imports, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a better measure of economic activity. National estimates of total direct and indirect GDP is calculated at $4.5 to $5.7 billion, which includes labour force income of $2.7 to $3.4 billion with related employment measured as  47,929 to 61,213 full time equivalents (FTEs) total including those employed directly, indirectly and in induced activities. This activity generates revenues of $1.5 to $1.9 billion to all levels of government combined in the form of various direct and indirect taxes on goods and services.  The higher results reflect an attrition rate suggested by nearly 3,000 respondent owners to a questionnaire and the lower estimates a higher attrition rate consistent with those on personal water craft and snowmobiles.

In 2015, annual investments in the economy, such as new purchases of equipment and machinery, including ATVs, ROVs and related enhancements to vehicles reached $1.2 billion before depreciation.  Further, annual operating expenditures amounted to an additional $6.7 billion bringing 2015 direct investment and operating expenditures to $7.9 billion.

Through data retrieved from Statistics Canada and the COHV’s current and historical data on sales of ATVs and OHVs in each province and territory, it has been identified that economic multiplier effects are strongest in provinces which are net beneficiaries of interprovincial trade and where industrial linkages within the province are the strongest.

Ontario has the strongest overall multipliers at 2.51 followed by British Columbia at 2.36. Alberta benefits from strong value shipped and GDP multipliers and Quebec has above national employment and labour force income multipliers as well as strong market shares due mostly to its high participation rates in off-road riding and excellent trails.

“Managing the responsible use of ATVs and ROVs is a subject of current interest for many governments. It is also of great interest to the COHV and the not-for-profit rider federations that have developed across the country,” stated Bob Ramsay. “This report confirms the scope and scale of the contribution that ATV and ROV use makes to provincial economies.  Especially in rural and northern areas, which the industry points out, is an important aspect that needs to be recognized and considered when discussion is focused on the responsible management of off-highway vehicle (OHV) activity across Canada.

ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY – FACT SHEET

• In 2015, there were an estimated 705,264 ATVs and 432,219 ROVs in operation.  This estimate is based on an 8.6% attrition rate of the current stock of ATVs from 1994 onward when annual sales data were available or could be estimated. Similar adjustments were calculated on ROV purchased after 2006 when they started being used for recreational purposes.  From those provinces where licensing data were available this rate is supported by that data.
• This comprehensive study updates an earlier 2006 study, also conducted by Smith Gunther, which examined the economic impact of ATVs specifically.  Both of these reports are a snapshot in time of the economic impacts of ATV and Side-by-Side or Recreational Off-Road Vehicles (ROVs) recreational activities.  Since the 2006 study, ROVs have become a significant factor and both data sources and geographic information systems have improved facilitating increased direct expenditures and availability of data to analyze the impacts.

• Other expenditures include upkeep and operations of the entire stock of all ATVs and ROVs that is the surviving stock of ATVs and ROVs sold in all years dating back to 1994 for ATVs and 2006 for ROV, enhancements of any on-highway vehicles to facilitate ATV or ROV recreational activities, paid repair and maintenance, gasoline for ATVs and ROVs, membership fees, licensing costs, attendance at events and off-highway vehicle shows and related travel, e.g. mileage charges, food and beverages and accommodation as well as related entertainment.
• Foreign spending is not considered in the report, but would increase economic impact further. Volunteer time is not considered since it is outside of Stats Canada’s Input/Output range (because no funds are exchanged). Smith Gunther, nevertheless value volunteer time at $554 million to $858 million annually. Licensing fees are also not considered because they are usually recycled back into the general government revenues where their subsequent use will no longer impact ATVs or ROVs. Smith Gunther estimates their impact at $99 million to $123 million.

Pascal Picotte To Be Inducted Into Canadian Motorcycle Hall Of Fame

MOTORCYCLING LEGENDS AND CHAMPIONS TO BE HONOURED AT ELEVENTH ANNUAL CANADIAN MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME INDUCTION BANQUET AND REUNION

Toronto ON – The Board of Directors of the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the eighth member of the Class of 2016. Pascal Picotte will be honoured at the 11th annual Induction Banquet and Reunion which takes place February 25, 2017 at the Sheraton Montreal Airport Hotel in Montreal.

Pascal Picotte grew up just south of Montreal in Granby, Quebec, near one of the more popular race track of the 1970s and 1980s, Sanair International. Pascal’s initiation into motorcycle racing came via Michel Mercier’s FAST Racing School and by the time he was 18, Picotte was the top ranked Amateur road racer in Canada.

1991 was a break-through year for Picotte, leading the Yamaha Canada effort early in the season and then joining Fast By Ferracci Ducati in the U.S. He won three Pro Twin races for Ducati in the U.S., and was fourth in the Superbike race in Miami. His abbreviated campaign in Canada included wins at Race City in Calgary and the World Superbike round at Mosport.

For 1992, Picotte focused on the U.S., taking eight of nine victories to earn the Pro Twins Championship, as well as a couple of Superbike podiums on his way to fifth in Superbike points. Picotte also took the works Ducati to Canada for a couple of races, edging arch-rival Steve Crevier at the Shannonville finale.

In 1998, Picotte started his famous four-year tenure with the beleaguered works Harley-Davidson superbike, showing considerable promise working with Canadian chassis guru Dale Rathwell. He dazzled at Daytona, and was fourth at Pike’s Peak and Las Vegas. In 2000 Picotte managed to get the VR1000 a first-ever finish in the Daytona 200, winding up ninth. Picotte’s success continued in 2005, although injuries limited him to wins at Mosport and Shannonville. By 2007 he opted to focus on team-management, running Francis Martin, Matt McBride and Chris Peris for Blackfoot-Suzuki.

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the fourth Member of the Class of 2016. Buddy Ford Sr. will be honoured at the 11th annual Induction Banquet and Reunion which takes place February 25, 2017 at the Sheraton Montreal Airport Hotel in Montreal.

Back in the fifties, everyone knew the name of Buddy Ford in Canada. In his home town of Trois Rivières, he was the local hero, the man that every kid in the street wanted to be when he grew up. He was an outstanding performer in almost every aspect of Canadian motorcycling.

‘’Edward Buddy Ford’’ was 1954 Canadian National Champion in Road Race & earned many National Karting titles as well. Buddy was also the king of Dirt Track in Quebec. During his best years, he won the Trois Rivières Dirt Track and others on many occasions. He was very well known in the US and had a factory ride with Triumph motorcycles.

Buddy Sr raced all around Quebec, Ontario and the Eastern US, competed in the Daytona Beach 200 mile race on the Beach and also ran on the Speedway the 1st year it opened for motorcycles.

During son, Buddy Jr`s career in motocross, dirt, ice and supermoto, Dad was his best sponsor and full time mechanic and there was never a race that Buddy Jr did not finish. As his son`s mechanic he received the Mechanic of the Year title on the circuit.

In 1985, Senior helped Junior start as an event promoter. They worked night and day to put on the first of many shows. Recognized as one of the best in the business of promoting dirt bike events, the Fords continue trying to give back to the sport, a little piece of what they had.

Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame to Induct Miguel Duhamel as final member of the Class of 2016

MOTORCYCLING LEGENDS AND CHAMPIONS TO BE HONOURED AT ELEVENTH ANNUAL CANADIAN MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME INDUCTION BANQUET AND REUNION

Toronto, ON – February 13, 2017 – The Board of Directors of the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the final member of the Class of 2016. Miguel Duhamel will be honoured at the 11th annual Induction Banquet and Reunion which takes place February 25, 2017 at the Sheraton Montreal Airport Hotel in Montreal.

Montreal’s Miguel Duhamel, now based in Las Vegas, is certainly one of the best road racers ever produced in Canada. He is central in the discussion surrounding Canada’s top ever International competitor, along with earlier stars like Mike Duff as well as Miguel’s legendary father, Yvon.

Miguel, along with older brother Mario and sister Gina, learned to ride on mini bikes at an early age, in public, at race events where father Yvon was working. From there, Miguel climbed the dirt bike competition ladder, eventually winding up in Super Cross.

Duhamel stepped up to Pro, earning Top Rookie Honors in 1988 aboard a wide selection of Monette Sport Kawasakis, backed by Pepsi with support from the family motorhome. He won his first career Pro Superbike National at the end of his rookie season, in the rain, beating Michel Mercier at Shannonville.

Duhamel teamed up with Manager Alan Labrosse, signing with Suzuki Canada for 1989 to ride for the works team run by George Morin and constructed by legendary tuner Mike Crompton.

When the Canadian National season opened, Duhamel won Sanair and round two at Shubenacadie, dramatically edging first Steve Crevier and then Rueben McMurter. At Mosport in June, Duhamel made his World Superbike debut, charging into the lead past Fred Merkel only to fall in the first leg.

Duhamel became the winningest Super Sports rider in history in 1996, with his 28th career win on his way to the title – Miguel remains the most successful racer in the history of the Super Sport category.

Perhaps Duhamel’s most impressive career stat are his five Daytona 200 wins, tied atop the all-time victory list with former rival Scott Russell.

Founded by Bar and Hedy Hodgson in 1999, the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame preserves and promotes Canadian motorcycle history for the benefit of the motorcycling community and public. Sponsored in part by the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC), the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is a non-profit association with charitable status. It is governed by an independent board of volunteer directors representing every region of the country. TORONTO (February 9, 2017) – Toronto will be center-stage for Canada’s motorcycle industry, Friday, February 17 to Sunday, February 19, as the world’s top brands showcase their newest products to enthusiasts at the Enercare Centre, Exhibition Place, during the 2017 Motorcycle Show-Toronto presented by Dalton Timmis Insurance.

This is the 30th edition of Ontario’s biggest motorcycle manufacturers’ show, and much like the auto show, will showcase the industry’s latest technical innovations for motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides and scooters, along with riding gear, accessories and travel destinations. In addition to the more than 500 bikes on display, there will be thrilling stunt shows, beginner riding lessons for children, a special night for female riders, and draws to win a new motorcycle and a European riding vacation.

We are hosting an exclusive media preview on the morning of the show opening, with access to tour the manufacturers’ exhibits, take photos and videos of the new models, and meet with company representatives.
